Rambert alumnus appointed as Principal and Artistic Director of Legat School
17th August 2016
Rambert School is proud to announce that one of our alumnus, Lee Smikle, has been appointed as the Principal and Artistic Director of Legat School of Contemporary Dance and Ballet.
After graduating from Rambert School in 1997, Lee has built a solid career in the dance sector. He has a wealth of teaching and choreographic experience; having worked with many organisations including Trinity Laban, Rambert School, The Place, Essential Alston, and Dance City. He is the Artistic Director of Shoreditch Youth Dance Company, which he founded in 2010. His company is noted for its pioneering approach to working with young dancers, and is one of the few independent youth based companies in London.
He was the Associate Artist in Residence at Rich Mix, where he founded ‘Free to Fall’, an Artists’ Development Programme for emerging choreographers based around a now popular movement ‘scratch’ event and forum. The programme took place in Sweden and Brazil.
As a core member of Matthew Bourne’s Adventures in Motion Pictures and New Adventures companies for several years, he toured internationally as a dancer, teacher and rehearsal assistant. He later contributed to Re:Bourne, and became a Resident Artist in 2015 there and for New Adventures.
Lee also works as a freelance producer and project manager with Renaud Wiser Dance Company, Charlie Ford, Melanie Lomoff, Compagnie T’d-U and Khamlane Halsackda. He has been working with John Ross as a Creative Producer since 2013.
Lee joins a host of Rambert School alumni in leading roles at world-leading dance training institutions , including Chris Powney – Artistic Director of The Royal Ballet School, Sara Matthews – Director of Central School of Ballet and, of course, Amanda Britton – Principal & Artistic Director of Rambert School.
