Pre-Vocational February half term workshops by Carys Staton

Reflections on February Half term Pre-vocational online workshops, from alumna and Pre-Vocational tutor Carys Staton.

Over the half term week the pro-vocational students got the opportunity to partake in a series of workshops from guest dance artists with the concentration on having fun!

Day one kicked off with Wins Burnett-Smith, dance artist who was a founding member of Hofesh Shechter company and now, amongst many other projects, works as a rehearsal director for Rambert. The dancers joined together in an intuitive, explorative movement practice, finding ways to connect to freedom and pleasure. The session worked through improvisation, led tasks as well as lots of introspective conversations to explore ‘why do we dance?’.

Workshop two was led by David Ledger who guided the group through some challenging exercises and thoughtful tasks. The dancers embraced the complex sequences taking time to embody the new style David was demonstrating, including lots of new floor work! The session gave the dancers lots of time to indulge in creative tasks, working with theatrical and pedestrian elements to form a short innovative solo by the end of the morning.

The final day was led by pre-vocational ballet teacher Ayumi. The session gave the dancers an opportunity to learn some ballet repertoire, cleverly adapting and modified by Ayumi to fit into everyones home Zoom studios! The dancers were able to take all the classical ballet technique gained and developed over the year and embrace the repertoire’s sequencing and musicality.
