FD/BA Applications

APPLICATIONS ARE NOW OPEN for 2024/25 entry to the FD/BA (Hons) Ballet and Contemporary Dance programmes.

The central objective of the degree is to develop and enhance the students’ ability to perform in Ballet and Contemporary Dance at a professional level. Therefore, irrespective of academic qualifications or prior learning experience, entry is subject to audition.

Rambert School of Ballet and Contemporary Dance welcomes applications from disabled people and offers places solely on the basis of potential and suitability for a career in the profession. You are encouraged to disclose any impairment or condition (for example, dyslexia, a physical, sensory or mental health condition) at the earliest opportunity so that we can endeavour to meet your needs at audition and during the course.

Applicants must have turned 16 years by 1st September in the year of entry.

EU, EEA and Overseas students are required to achieve at least a Level B1 in one of the English testing systems recognised by the UKVI. The certificate gained should be a Secure English Language Test (SELT).

There are no academic requirements for entry to the FD/BA (Hons) Ballet and Contemporary Course course.  Entry is via a two stage audition process.

Entry to Rambert School for September 2024 is through a two-stage audition process. All applicants must complete and submit an application form and pay the £50 application fee. This fee covers the cost of processing the application and is not refundable if an audition offer is not made.

The school is also able to offer a limited number of application fee waivers please apply directly to the school by emailing Head of Admissions at Judy Bowden to make a request for an application fee waiver.

Rambert School welcomes applications from EU, EEA and students from Overseas.  All first stage auditions will be in person at Rambert School.

Overseas students should follow the first stage digital audition process if they are unable to attend in person.  Overseas students invited to second stage may be invited to submit a solo plus attend an interview via Zoom or attend second stage in person if possible.

Auditions 

First stage auditions are to be held in person at the School.  

Auditions will be held on: 

Monday 16 January AM/PM
Friday 27 January AM/PM
Friday 3 February AM/PM
Friday 24 February AM/PM
Friday 10 March AM/PM (Only available for applications received after 13th February)

The admissions team will allocate you an audition day and time. 

Applicants unable to attend in person for the first stage audition process are invited to follow the digital audition route detailed below. Applicants who submit a digital audition should be reassured that digital auditions are regarded equally to those whom are able to attend in person.  

First Stage Audition   

AM SESSION: 9:30AM – 1:00PM 
PM SESSION: 2:30PM – 6:00PM (approx)
NB: Principal’s talk for all AM and PM auditionees and parents/guardians will be held at 1:30PM.  

On the day of your audition, please ensure you arrive in plenty of time to register and warm-up. There will be a space for storing any luggage or bags. Only items necessary for the audition should be taken into the studio.   

Accompanying parents/guardians are invited for a tour of the School once the audition has started (approximately 9:30AM for AM audition and 2:30PM for PM audition). At 1:30PM, the Principal, Amanda Britton, will give a short talk open to all auditionees and accompanying parents/guardians.   

First Stage Audition Content 

  • Focus warmup 
  • Ballet with pointe work for auditionees with pointe training  
  • Contemporary, including creative work/improvisation 
  • Performance of a pre-prepared solo (to panel only) 

Pre-Prepared Solo  

Auditionees should prepare a solo to perform to the panel. The solo should be a maximum of 1 minute and will preferably be your own choreography (not classical repertoire) 

If music is used, an iPod or mobile phone should be brought to the audition.

Auditionees will be advised if they have been successful within 48 hours of audition.   

What to wear 

Ballet – Leotards and tights/unitards/t-shirt and leggings with soft ballet shoes. Pointe shoes for students on pointe.
Contemporary – comfortable clothing to move in, e.g. shorts, leggings, t-shirts. Bare feet or socks 

When to arrive 

For AM auditions, auditionees should arrive at 8:45AM to register and warm-up for the start of the audition at 9:30AM.  
For PM auditions, auditionees should arrive no earlier than 1:15PM to attend the Principal’s Talk, following the Principals talk auditionees will be registered and have time to  warm-up before the start of the audition.

Second Stage Audition 

Successful auditionees from the first stage audition will be invited to attend a second stage audition on either Friday 17 March 2023 AM or PM or Monday 20 March AM or PM 

Audition Content 

  • 1-hour Ballet class 
  • Pointe work for auditionees with pointe training  
  • 1-hour Contemporary Dance class, including a creative work/improvisation
  • Some auditionees will be required to attend a physical assessment  
  • Some auditionees will be required to attend an interview  

 What to wear 

Ballet – Leotards and tights/unitards/t-shirt and leggings with soft ballet shoes. Pointe shoes for students on pointe.
Contemporary – comfortable clothing to move in, e.g. shorts, leggings, t-shirts. Bare feet or socks
Physical Assessment – Shorts and tight fitting t-shirt/crop top

AM auditions, auditionees should arrive at 8:45 AM to register and warm-up for the start of class at 9:30 AM. 
PM auditions commence at 2.30 PM. Auditionees should arrive at 2.00 PM for registration.

Application Fee

There is a one-time, non-refundable administrative fee of £50. This fee covers the cost of processing the application and is not refundable if an audition offer is not made.
