Living in Twickenham

Isleworth, from the River Thames

Rambert School is located on the edge of London in one of its most beautiful corners a minute's walk from the River Thames within an area called Twickenham. Nearby are picturesque riverside communities and town centres like Richmond, Kingston, Hampton, Isleworth and Teddington. Also very close are a number of London's most famous parks such as Richmond Park, Osterley Park, Richmond Deer Park, Bushy Park and Sion Park.

In relocating itself, from 2005 forward, the school has chosen to remain in the special green and leafy part of London because the environment has proven, over some twenty years, to be ideal for dance training. Here the student, while with access to London, can live close to the School. They can thus spend more time in the studios and less time and money on travelling. They are able to work in the studios during the evenings and on weekends. This is crucially important because dancers cannot practise at home. They can only to a very limited extent work on choreography at home. Keeping its studios open and safe for students (rather than rented out or closed) is central to the activity of Rambert School and could not be done in central London.

Rambert School's situation, atmosphere and accomplishment in its two decades at Twickenham have been unique among the better professional schools in the UK. It has been so through the ethos that has grown out of, or been built within a location that is green, safe, spacious, inexpensive to live in and - in a sense - relaxed. Through all these things the School has remained extraordinarily energised and creative.
